Learn about how an innovative partnership in Seattle among community groups, labor, and workforce trainers is creating the demand for good, green jobs, and ensuring pathways to those jobs.
On the call January 26 call we heard from:
- Steve Gelb from SustainableWorks! and Keisha Krumm from Sound Alliance who talked about the "whole-neighborhood" approach to marketing energy retrofits through community organizing, and how it can achieve economies of scale.
- Randy Scott from the Washington State Plumbers and Pipefitters discussed how direct-entry slots were negotiated for disadvantaged populations to enter apprenticeships with participating unions, and the role of organized labor in creating joint training and retraining programs, a skilled workforce, and family-wage jobs;
- Diane Davies from the Seattle Vocational Institute talked about the role of pre-apprenticeships in the preparation of workers and in the larger program.
The SustainableWorks! model demonstrates how diverse actors can work together to grow the local green economy, create good jobs, and create pathways to those jobs through energy retrofit programs.
