Funding for participant stipends

Up to Importance of partnerships in qualifying for training grants

Funding for participant stipends

Posted by Grace Lee at June 04. 2009

Our agency is interested in knowing whether or not the money awarded to grantees by the DOL Green Job Training grant program could be used to fund participant stipends for on-the-job training as part of an unskilled worker training program [in Brownfield site remediation].

I would like to know how could we fund OJT workers through these monies granted.

Are grants going to be given to organizations that are partnered with other organizations?

We are a father-son minority janitorial business in San Francisco.  Our workers are minorities also working their way out of poverty.

Do we qualify for any grant monies?

Since the water crisis in California may cause a drastic shortage of fruits, vegetables and nuts on grocery shelves across the country, will any stipends be paid for training in the development of community gardens, the canning of produce, and farm markets?

My understanding is no. However, the DOL is encouraging leveraging these grants with other funding sources, some of which can be used for stipends - for instance, I believe that the ARRA formula allocations to local Workforce Invesment Boards for adult & displaced workers can be so used. I'd encourage talking to your local WIB and also to your local or state social service agency.
