Greens Jobs that require minimum education and skills

Posted by Naomi Foster at July 08. 2009

I work in a nonprofit working that provides classes for adults towards their GED or adults in need of ESL classes.  We are always looking for jobs that require minimum skill and education.  Does anyone have any suggestions where these individuals could find work in the Green sector?  Also are there any certificate programs that would be appropriate for this population?

Check out CET, Center for Employment Training, which has many sites in CA, also in TX, IL, NC, VA.  CET has served your population for 40 years, and is now starting new green collar training courses (Green Building Construction Technician (incl. solar PV), Solar Panel Installer, Solar Thermal Installer, Pre-Weatherization and Retrofitting Technician, HVAC (incl. solar PV), and Electrician (incl. solar PV).  http://cetweb.org/aboutcet/contact_us.html

In the resources section of the Green for All site you can download the Green Jobs Guidebook, http://www.greenforall.org/resources/green-jobs-guidebook.  It has a pretty comprehensive list of green jobs that includes pertinent information such as required level of education and pay scale.

The development of specifically green certificates for entry level workers is slow in the making, though we will probably be seeing it integrated more over the next year in existing job training areas in some of the more forward industries, like construction.  For example, NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research) has a new addition to their construction curricula called Your Role in the Green Environment, http://www.nccer.org/green.aspx.  If you can't find it online, someone from NCCER will be able to tell you locations at which their training programs are offered for the population you serve.
