Courtney Tellefsen, The Produce Box
Today, more than 150 stay-at-home moms, dads, and grandparents drop off fresh produce to their family, friends and neighbors. In 2012 alone, over a million pounds of North Carolina fruits, veggies and other assorted farm-fresh yield were boxed and distributed. The cost of a box ranges from $18.50 to $28 depending on what option is selected and the size of the family. This year, nearly 8000 families will benefit from the effort of a wide-ranging web of moms, dads and grandparents. In addition, the growing wave of cooperation has been a boon for the local farmers as it is the most efficient way to get nearly 100 different varieties of fresh North Carolina produce into circulation after the harvest.
