As Congress begins to debate the Climate Security Act (S. 2191), Green For All issued a statement applauding Senator Boxer for including a number of important modifications to the bill that will help support the creation of green-collar jobs and job training programs. Green For All also urged Members of Congress to support climate protection legislation that helps build an inclusive green economy strong enough to lift people out of poverty while staving off the worst effects of global warming. The statement, from Green For All Founder and President Van Jones, follows:
“We applaud Senator Boxer’s leadership in including important modifications to the Lieberman-Warner bill that support the creation of green-collar jobs and job training programs. While much work lies ahead on the legislation, Senator Boxer, along with the bill’s sponsors and other members committed to averting the worst consequences of global warming, have made great strides to develop climate protection policy that provides an opportunity for all Americans to benefit from the green economy.
“As an organization dedicated to building an inclusive green economy, we hope Senator Boxer’s substitute amendment will begin a real conservation about how to address climate change in a way that will improve the health, wealth, and well-being of low and moderate-income people and provide pathways out of poverty for all American workers and communities.
“Senator Boxer’s version of the Climate Security Act would allocate over $60 billion through 2050 to the Green Jobs Act that was passed into law in last year’s energy bill and which includes a strong emphasis on creating green pathways out of poverty. We can and must seize this extraordinary opportunity to advance a federal agenda that fights both poverty and pollution at the same time.”
