Fresh Films, Fresh Ideas

Innovation. Community organizing. Justice. These are the themes of the Oakland Innovation Film Lab, coming to town June 18-21.

The Film Lab, hosted by BluBlak Media, gives students, emerging artists and award-winning documentarians the opportunity to show off their creative abilities. It focuses on experimental projects that take a new and powerful approach to storytelling. Each of the films selected for this year’s event adds something new to the film genre—while also giving a voice to social themes.

As part of the event, Green For All’s Director of Education and Outreach, Rosa González will join Aekta Shah, a Green For All Fellow and Food Justice Director for I-SEEED along with other local foodies for a dialogue on food justice, followed by a screening of the film Soul Food Junkies by Byron Hurt.

In addition to focusing on innovation, this year’s Film Lab explores issues like youth empowerment through hip-hop, food justice, escalating high school dropout rates, and modern love and relationships.  The event also features a youth lab for student filmmakers.

Film Lab host BluBlak Media was founded in 1998 by Green For All Fellow Ashara Ekundayo, with a  mission of deepening conversation and collaboration between organizations engaging with communities of color.
