About the State and Local Initiatives Team

The State and Local Initiatives Team is focused on the implementation, replication, and scaling of cutting-edge sustainable development models. Our work is done in partnership with local practitioners in order to generate meaningful and responsive solutions that work on the ground. This 8-person team forms the core of Green For All’s research, policy, and state and local initiative work across the country. We take an outcomes based approach focused on strategies that:

• Advance all three E’s of sustainability – economic growth, environmental benefit, and social equity;

• Create jobs, business opportunities, and other improvements for communities who need them most; and

• Drive long-term transformation of the economy.

Some of our current projects include the replication and scaling of an energy efficiency finance model for multifamily affordable housing, developing field-defining tools and models for job creation in stormwater management and green infrastructure, designing a jobs strategy for utility energy efficiency investments, and providing business support services to green entrepreneurs working to build sustainable local economies.

Position Summary

The Director of State and Local Initiatives is responsible for advancing the work of the State and Local Initiatives team by providing day-to-day leadership for team members, maintaining and advancing our practitioner-based approach to generating solutions, and directing a significant area of content-based work for the organization.

The Director is charged with managing the team workplan, providing strategic guidance and other support to staff, and ensuring all team projects are completed and producing maximum outcomes for the organization. The Director manages all hiring and staff development processes and is responsible for ensuring all team protocols and systems are functioning effectively. The Director will also advance and have responsibility for a distinct set of projects, programs, and deliverables.

The ideal candidate will be an experienced team leader with a demonstrated ability to manage teams of high performing staff as well as initiate and manage a wide range of projects and deliver results for his or her organization. Additionally we are seeking candidates who can demonstrate expertise in one or more of the following areas: sustainable economic development, water, energy efficiency, social equity, or other green economy issues. The candidate must be able to manage and lead the team effectively as well as successfully drive program-based initiatives.

This is a full-time permanent position based in our Oakland, California headquarters.

Primary Responsibilities

• In partnership with the Chief Strategist, manage the overall performance of the State and Local Initiatives team and ensure that team priorities are aligned with larger organizational strategy.

• Day-to-day leadership of the State and Local Initiatives team including regular workplanning with team members, tracking overall team workplan, and managing staffing needs.

• Develop Green For All’s campaign opportunities and policy initiatives to create green jobs, inclusive economic opportunities, and environmental outcomes in key sectors.

• Provide leadership and content on specific issues and strategies, including conducting research, writing, engaging and educating other team members.

• Ensure that departmental programs are successful, broadly recognized, and sought after across the field.

• Coordinate communications and manage joint initiatives with other Green For All departments.

• Manage the development and maintenance of key departmental information systems and team protocols including budget management.

• Support team members in identifying and meeting their professional development goals.

• Help to identify funding opportunities and prepare proposals. Responsible for making sure all grant deadlines are met for the State and Local Initiatives team.

• Represent Green For All with external partners and in public speaking roles.

• Other duties as needed.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice and belief in Green For All’s mission and organizational objectives.

• A Bachelors degree or equivalent plus 7-10 years of responsibility managing teams of high performing staff.

• 3-4 years of experience working in one of the following content areas: sustainable economic development, water, energy efficiency, social equity, or other green economy issues.

• Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple project deadlines simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

• Proven ability to manage teams as well as individual high performing staff; experience setting objectives, monitoring and evaluating impact, and identifying and applying opportunities for learning and development.

• Strong leadership and analytical skills; excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills. • Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining information systems including database and other systems management.

• Experience creating and managing budgets.

• Skilled at working effectively with a diversity of people and organizations.

• Demonstrated ability to take initiative when required by the situation and proven ability to accomplish tasks on time and within budget.

• Ability to work in a dynamic and frequently changing environment.

• Able to travel as needed.

Compensation: Full-time, commensurate with experience, excellent benefits package.
